Things to consider before joining a support group

  • Talk to one or more of the group's members to be sure the group will meet your needs.

  • Find out who sponsors the group.

  • Is a fee or donation required?

  • Do group members believe the sessions have helped them?

  • It is a big step the first time you attend a meeting. You may feel like an outsider or feel very anxious. It is recommended that you attend a meeting at least twice before deciding if the group will meet your needs. You should feel comfortable in the group and with the facilitator. If you have any concerns or fears about joining a group please discuss them with the group’s facilitator.

  • You may attend a group meeting or several meetings and it doesn’t feel right. This may be because it is too soon for you. If this is the case then give yourself some more time and then try again. Of course, it may be that the group isn’t right for you so you may need to look for another group or attend one to one counselling.

Alternatives to attending support group meetings

  • You can visit your local doctor.

  • You can visit a counsellor or psychiatrist for one to one counselling. Many support groups have a list of counsellors or psychiatrists who specialize in that area.

  • If you are unable to attend meetings or appointments many organizations offer counselling over the phone or by email.

  • Some organizations provide message boards or chat rooms where people can chat with other people facing similar situations in relative anonymity. Please be aware that the advice being given may not be from a professionally qualified person but by someone who is going through or been through a similar experience to you. Also, the message board or chat room may not be monitored by a facilitator or other professional.
